Many types of containers are reused in order to transport water. This girl was drinking water just drawn from the well, but the container being used made for a rather shocking image.

A colleague overheard these girls talking, and learned they walked several kilometres to this well - instead of their own local one - because they heard some mzungus (white people!) were here. We were stunned or surprised by this news and enchanted by the precious friendship the two shared.

As part of a day to learn about rural life in Tanzania, our group joined a local youth leader (on right) for a long walk to and from his well. At least twice a day he walks several kilometers each way to access clean water. It was quite humbling to know how hard it is for him, yet how easy it is for us to turn a tap and leave the water running. The youth and his family are grateful though, as before they had to walk much farther and the current situation is an improvement.
